In May 2000 the Kentucky General Assembly authorized Jefferson County and Louisville residents to vote on a consolidated governing body. Later that year residents chose to merge county and city. The general election for council seats took place November 2002 with the newly elected officials taking their positions January 1, 2003.

The recently formed Louisville/Jefferson County Metro government consists of one mayor and 26 Councilmen. The council’s role as the legislative body is to create laws and oversee the budget. The mayor serves as lead executive, hiring department and agency heads, creating budgets, and using executive power to veto law. The merger moved Louisville Metro to the 26th largest city in the United States.*
